Brian H. Hook

Brian H. Hook was United States Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 2008 to 2009.

Biography

Brian H. Hook received a bachelor's degree in Marketing from the University of St. Thomas, a master's degree in Philosophy from Boston College and, in 1999, a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law. Hook served as a legislative aide to Rep. Jim Leach (RIA-2) in the early 1990s. While he was in law school, from 1996 to 1997, Hook was a deputy legislative liaison for Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad.

After law school, in 1999, Hook joined the Washington, D.C. law firm of Hogan & Hartson as an associate attorney. During his time at Hogan & Hartson, Hook testified before the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence about sharing of information between intelligence and law enforcement officials.

Hook joined the United States Department of Justice's Office of Legal Policy in 2003. During his time at the Justice Department, he represented the executive branch before the 9/11 Commission, worked on confirming the president's judicial nominees, and helped develop financial regulations in the wake of the Enron scandal. In 2004, he became Special Assistant to the President for Policy in the Office of the White House Chief of Staff; there, he helped coordinate policy between the United States Homeland Security Council, the United States Domestic Policy Council, and the Council on Environmental Quality.

President of the United States George W. Bush designated Hook as Acting Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs in July 2008, and he later became Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs on October 3, 2008. He held this office until January 20, 2009.
